CRV Inside smell

Postby PaulDavidson on Thu Feb 12, 2009 2:06 pm

2005 CRV 2.2 CDTi
For the past couple of months there's been a fumey smell when I have the air coming from the outside (i.e. not on recirculate). It doesn't smell like diesel exhaust fumes but more like a used oil type of smell (oil level is staying steady) and is present whether stood still or moving (more when stood still presumably as no moving air going past car). It must be coming in through the air vents as it stops when I put it on re-circulate and turn off the fan.
Has anybody else experienced this or does anybody have any ideas as to what it could be?

Hi, mine is a '99 model, but has suffered from two smells - the first comes from 'cheap' screenwash fluid, which seems to go off after a few months and creates a stink through the vents every time I wash the screen; the second came from the air conditioning system - I think the filter or cooler matrix was choked with leaves and debris, and being constantly damp whenever the A/C is on, is prone to rotting. Service garage changed the filter, which seemes to have helped. You can also buy A/C system Cleaner which is supposed to combat this, but I haven't tried it.
Good Luck!
