Greetings from new owner and anyone tried Parking Dynamics?

Postby bat400 on Fri Aug 20, 2010 7:51 pm

Hi - just became an FR-V owner yesterday - 06 2.2 ES with just under 100k on it - drives very well so far and I'm really liking the styling and internal layout.

Anyway, I have a few things to sort out: mats, bluetooth, satnav, ipod etc, and am seriously looking at parking sensors as I can't see much out the back! Has anyone actually fitted the electromagnetic Parking Dynamics PD1 sensor to their FR-V? I'm considering this solution because (a) it doesn't require me to drill holes or paint sensors, and (b) I have a towbar fitted and the PD1 apparently has less issues with this.

The PD1 is here:

I'd be really interested to hear if anyone has one of these on their FR-V, especially if they also have a towbar.

Cheers,
Al

Hi,

I picked up our FR-V last Saturday and like you thought parking sensors were a good idea.
I have a friend who fitted the type you are considering but after a year has ditched it in favour of the fitted sensor type. I think if you space the sensors to the side of your tow bar you should not have any problems.
I found fitting the sensors an easy job and the place I bought them provided a colour choice. Whilst my colour (Perseus Aqua Blue) was not available, I chose silver, and they look alot less obtrusive than black ones. What colour is your car?

This is where I bought my sensors :-

We seem to have similar priorities. I have demanded a set of Honda tailored mats after the garage which sold us the car did not have it ready on time and messed us about a bit. The car is fantastic though! :D

Hope that is of some use.

I looked into the pd stuff a while back and wasn't convinced. Think standard type would be better as most oem ones fitted are of that type

how easy were these to fit? Did you take the bumper off? Any tips/lessons learnt?

Hi,
Very easy to fit. I was on the lookout for a workshop manual to read how to take off the bumper off but I was outbid on e-bay and have not sourced another since.
I gave it a go and taking the bumper off was really easy. Remove two screws in each wheel arch, two nuts at bottom attaching to undertray. Two bolts - each side of boot opening under tailgate. Unclip each side of the bumper (easily manipulated) near the two screws you first removed and slide off.

The pack comes with a drill bit. Spend time carefully measuring where to place the sensors without fouling anywhere when the bumper is replaced.I put masking tape on the bumper and marked the position of each before cutting. I examined the OEM sensor positions and copied that. Make sure you get your sensors placed as horizontal as possible. Once drilled, place sensors in and route wires through the vent below the driver's side rear lamp.
Follow the instructions in the pack and solder the two wires onto the reverse light wiring. You could get an electrician to do this if you cant manage yourself.
I placed the wiring box in the void next to the lamp, so all you can see is one wire and the small speaker. And you can only see them if you really look when you are in the boot.
Follow procedure in reverse to replace bumper.
That's pretty much it.

looking at that ebay kit, did you need to angle them at all so they were parallel to the ground? plus last time i saw some oem fitted ones, the two in the middle were slightly lower position than the corner ones. is that how u did yourS?

Yes, the two outermost ones sit below the lights, and the other two sit in/near the groove lower in the bumper. Positioning took me the largest part of the installation. The sensors come with washers which help you angle them correctly.

Good luck! :)

Have fitted it now and am basically happy - will report back again once I've used it for a couple of weeks...
