Not really sure the difference in tire make fron to back will make that much of a difference. I have had many cars in the past like that and certainly not had any ill effects. Then again I really am no expert so its possible I guess.

My FRV does have different front to back tires, but then Honda certainly has not mentioned that as being a possible issue on its previous 2 visits regarding the vibration issues.

I am still hoping that it will all be cleared up with the new steering damper.

Well my car is back with a new steering damper...unfortunately whilst a little better vibration wise its still not a nice drive over 65mph.

Over to Honda to come up with next idea. Unfortunately what with the high motor way miles I do if it doesn't get sorted or improve very soon I will have to get rid of my FRV. Really not what I want as do love it, but I can't live with its bad motorway manners

On the wheel heat buildup question. That is most likely front brake binding. This is quite common when pads are low and the piston is pushed fully out. The vibration will be the disc warping. It won't do the rest of the components like the bearing any good as the grease will thin slightly and lead to premature wear.

On the wheel balancing vibration question, I would get them to check the driveshafts. these do have some small balancing weights on them (experience based on other cars) and therefore could impact the steering over a certain speed. The 65mph you quote does sound liek a balacing issues, though it should go away at higher speeds before it returns.

whilst driving to show a couple of days back i was approaching 70mph when out the blue my car steering was shaking violently.... and instantly i thought of this post and was annoyed the car was playing up

on the way back i had no wheel balancing issues at all so im left assuming it was a bad stretch of road as it appeared fine.... are people testing there motors on the same stretch of road when trying to ressolve steering issues as a simple solution could just be the road condition!
Image Image Image be different and get modifying!!!

Right touch wood after 3 attempts looks like the vibration issue is sorted.

I knew it wasn't just the normal daily commute road surface as had driven it around France for a 1000 miles.

Anyway this time Honda Technical advised the dealer to check the phasing ( :?: ) between the tyres and the wheels. To be honest that meant nothing to me or the Service desk chappy. Supposedly its a fancy balancing thing.

They also rotated the wheels front to back, re did the tracking and found one tyre was not seated quite right.

Anyway the out come...it has seemed to work. Will know more after a little drive tomorrow.

Experienced steering wheel shake from a 2005 FRV- Sport that I bought four months ago privately. As soon as I hit 60-65mph the steering wheel shook, really quite alarmingly. I was advised that this was probably due to 'stepped' tyres. I drove with the shake for four months or so and the situation did improve a little but when I had the car serviced a week ago decided to change the front tyres. Garage recommended harder wearing Continental Sport tyres and to be honest it seems to have done the trick - the shaking appears to have disappeared and overall the ride is definitely smoother. Hope this helps.
