Odd wheel/tyre concern..observation

Postby Eric on Tue Jun 29, 2010 8:52 pm

Well I got my FRV back in March and love it....2.2CTDI Sport

Last Friday replaced the 2 front tyres. Had a few issues with vibration through the steering wheel over 65mph and after 3 attempts at balancing by the tyre company I gave up and let the Honda dealer sort it. So far so good vibration wise.

Now I did notice one thing. Not having had a car with alloy wheels (this has 17inch Honda alloys) before I am not sure if the following is normal...

After say a 35 - 40 mile motorway/town drive I noticed that the alloys were very hot. When I say hot I mean that you could put your hand on them for no more than 5 seconds. Now at a guess I would say thats just down to heat dissaption from the brakes...after all its not the smallest of cars to slow down. Obviously the fronts work a lot harder than the rears. Tyres are hot but not over the top.

Any one else noticed this?

Its probably just me worrying, but then if I did not worry I would not know what to do with myself

i'd say its unusual to have wheels that would get hat hot.....

im currently running on aftermarket 19"s at the moment and after long drives to shows etc i can clean the wheels without any heat transfer at all

when i had my 16" alloys (honda ones) i didnt have any probs either

id be looking to get this checked...... the air passing through should eliminate the heat soak and unless you are really pushing hard (really pushing for like track days or something) i cant see any reason why the wheels would get hot.... brakes yes but not the wheels......
Image Image Image be different and get modifying!!!

Eric,
Still havn't been out for a long drive in my car yet, but after what tezmed said about cleaning wheels, i to have cleaned my wheels after a long drive and had no problem in touching or cleaning the wheels.
If yours are getting that hot, you have either got a very tight/knackered wheel bearing or more likely your front brake is binding.
Either way best to get it checked.

Thanks all.

Its booked in tomorrow. Just got back from France and had fairly bad vibrations through the steering wheel even after having the wheels re - balanced by the local dealer couple weeks ago. It was hard to tell on the lovely M25 road surfaces, but as soon as I hit the smooth French motor ways it juts felt nasty!!

Will mention the heat build up in the wheels

Hi, i just picked up my new (used 55 plate, 25000 miles, FRV 2l SE) today and enjoyed a decent length maiden drive (from Dealer in Edinburgh to Home in Glasgow). Anyway, i also noticed an extremely annoying continuous shudder through the steering wheel at speeds over 65mph. The last time i had such a sensation was when my old Citroen Xsara had ridiculously worn front tyres (almost dangerously worn). But given the fact that the 4 FRV tyres look practically new and the dealer claimed they had laser aligned the steering before my collection (i had mentioned a strange feeling when turning right during the test drive at lower speeds). So, i felt relieved to see the post by 'Eric' on 'tyre concern', and i am awaiting a call back from the dealer to discuss this. Significantly, i note that the 2 front tyres are Pirelli, while the 2 rear tyres are Michellin? Gut feeling makes me believe this is where my problem lies - can anyone offer any advice on what i should request/demand from the dealer? In case i am given a choice - what tyres are the best for the FRV: Michellin or Pirelli? I seen this review from another forum post - http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyres_For/Honda/FR-V.htm

On another matter which i discovered to my annoyance (might have to open th

Many thanks in advance

Jonny...just seen your post regarding your wheel vibration issues...

I put my car back in with Honda on Tuesday and after re checking balancing etc they found no issues that side. They contacted Honda technical who believed it is the steering damper. For me the issue started around 60 and went on past 100mph (naughty boy) which seems to relate exactly to what Technical said. The vibrations just seem to faze in when ever they like with no particular pattern.

My car will go back in next Tuesday to get the damper replaced so will update as soon as I get it back. Fingers crossed that will sort it.

Hi Eric,

Thanks heaps for your update!

I'll mention your thoughts to the dealer where i bought my FRV from, only problem is they are not Honda Franchise (Peter Vardy) so i dont know how they will handle this with Honda Technical ???

So does that mean you dont believe the problem is being caused by your tyres ??? Should i rule out my vibration issues being caused by 'the wrong type of tyres' on the front - Pirelli ? And different ones being on the back - Michellin ?

Please keep me updated Eric!

Thanks & best regards
