Fuel economy: how good is yours?

Postby mattadams on Fri Apr 11, 2008 9:17 am

Dear forum colleagues,
I recently purchased a 2005 Honda CRV i-CDTI, and I have to say it is a superb vehicle. I took it out in the snow and ice at the weekend and it was faultless, easily navigating slippery roads that left others stranded and up the kerb!
The fuel economy of my CRV is also excellent, and I am averaging around 38mpg.
However, this is somewhat below the 41mpg suggested by Honda. How does everyone else find the mpg on the CRV, and is there a "right" way to drive it to achieve the maximum mpg figure? (no silly suggestions please)
Matt.

I had a 2006 CRV and only managed circa 35mpg not matter how hard I tried to get better. I now have a 2008 CRV averaging only 34mpg - granted it is new but remain hopeful it will get better. Had Honda check out the first one a couple of times but they never managed to improve it

still only managing 35mpg on standard diesel - not good!

However...... had to use the premium version the other day and from a full tank managed 37mpg. I say 'had to' because my company insist on the cheap stuff.

So maybe there is some truth in the better stuff offering more mpg

Got the current CR-V and get just over 40 mpg. This is the second one, the first one was written off in an acident when some clown pulled out in front of me and I t-boned him doing around 55 mph. The first car didn't go as well as the second one and the fuel economy wasn't as good either.

I'm getting 32mpg out of my petrol CR-V, which means that with the price differential, I am probably better off than if I had purchased a diesel!!

For other reasons I have disposed of my CR-V CDTi. However, I used to average 38 mpg without trying. If I tried hard and drove gently, getting into 5th and 6th gear as quickly as possible, I could get 40 mpg. On a long run, I got 42 mpg. Since switching to a Toyota Rav4, I am getting 43 mpg as an average.

With a diesel, it is possible to get into the higher gears more quickly than petrol and that is the secret of the high mileages.

I had a 2005 2.2 ctdi and got 42.4 mpg avge when solo but when towing it came down to 32 - more or less as expected. I have just updated to 2007/8 EX and will post some data as soon as possible.

I have a 2007 CRVi Exec petrol 2litre,,, In drive to Turkey from the UK twice a year minimum,, but we alternate with a Hyundai Coupe S111, previously driven to Turkey with 2006 Santa Fe ,.
Fuel with Santa fe about 406 - 418 per tank
Honda CRV fuel no more than 230

have just got back from Turkey and the Honda has cost me a fortune ,, Filling it up twice to the Coupe which is a 2Litre injection,, I spoke to my Honda dealer before going as I was concerned with the tyre wear as if the front tyres were not balanced or toed in correctly.
It was checked twice and it was found to be correct and the explanation was that it was a design fault that the tyres were wearing somewhat earlier.

Anyone found the same problem and if the fuel consumption can be increased to better than about 24 -28 on a long run.. I even have fuel magnets on the ingoing fuel pipes but to no avail,,, however were excellant on the Santa Fe
Wish I had kept my Santa Fe what a great 4x4.....
looking forward to any advice thanx
