Hi,

50k service is up on my FRV. Honda want £316 to do the service. Times being hard and credit crunch I thought I'd shop around, and Kwik Fit will do the same service for £156. I got back to Honda and told them about the price difference and they have advised me that they use genuine Honda parts and charge a different hourly rate. No flexibility in price at all.

You'd think with car companies loosing cash left right and centre they'd be chomping at the bit but no. Not taking my car there. Go to Kwik Fit instead. Not that fussed about losing my Honda service history as it doesn't make a great deal of difference at the end and I intend to keep the car for at least another year or so.

Boy, that is depressing. I have my 87K service coming up, and I was hoping that there would be some room for negotiating the price. Out of interest, would you mind naming which dealer you approached?

Oh, and do let us know how Kwik-Fit were, and how much they charged you for all the parts and labour.

Hi,

Honda garage was Swansea Bassetts that had their hole in the sand. Got the service done (yesterday) for £156 in Kwik Fit Carmarthen - they reported that rear pads were worn and windscreen washers were pointing at 180 desgrees - I explained the washers were due to Monkeys at Longleat the guy found that very amusing but mentioned it may fail an mot bear that in mind. Gave the car back to me on time and service book stamped. I dropped it off at 9:30 and they had it ready aby 14:00.

I do not regret betting the car done there saved me cash ! Not at all worried about an adverse affect on my moving on price as by the time I intend to get rid of it it will have moon mileage!!

If anyone is looking to fit Genuine approved parts then AutoPartsFinder.co.uk is a site which may be able to help you out, it's free to use and you can search for parts from most Brands and only displays parts from the dealers themselves. If you are looking for more than one part click on the 'Advance Search' tab and you'll get the opportunity to search for 4 parts from 4 different brands if you want. It's easy to use you just select the brand of the part, type in the part number/s then hit search. The results (only from dealers advertising) tell you who has them, how much it costs along with direct contact to the dealers so you can decide who to call up and buy the parts from.

I have just had a 60,000 mile service completed on my 2002 crv at gordons Honda Bolton. It cost £304!!! They also told me it needed discs and pads front and rear £430 plus fitting!I got the parts for 136 and my local mechanic fitted them for £60.It seems that if they can' t sell the cars then they are going to rip us off on servicing.Never again. I wrote to Honda in Slough but they fobbed me off saying that dealers can charge what they want.Be warned!!

It is amazing that dealers would try and rinse as much cash from customers, rather than going for the value & repeat business. I guess the thing to do is buy your own parts, and go independent.

I do find it all hard to understand. I only go to Bassetts 'cause it's the nearest. Next nearest to me is Bridgend (which is Bassetts) or Cardiff which is over an hours drive and not worth the inconvenience.

Bassetts sales weren't particularly good when I was looking - I told them what I wanted they couldn't find it. I then looked on 'Tinternet and found one in Stoke that was exactly what I was looking for, and they were very helpful indeed (but bleedin miles away - caan't blame them for that ).

Interesting if we start to see main dealers fall by the wayside as this econiomic downturn continues. Have heard lots about manufacturing being affected in the car industry but nothing about dealers. Hijacking my own thread here ha ha ha

Hope you can help me answer some questions
Did you get a full service or interim?
Is your FRV petrol or diesel?
Did you have to pay for/ask for any (hidden) extras?

Thanks - I am about to book my service, and Kwik-Fit have quoted me £154 for a full service on a diesel FRV, including a £5 discount if I book online. Although I don't need one yet, Kwik-Fit say they will also charge £20 for an MOT if I have it done at the same time as my service.

I may just do an interim service now (£94, including £5 online discount), and do the full one when my MOT is due. Is it even worth doing an interim service? I do about 5000 miles urban driving a year, and about 1000 motorway miles.

I have asked for some quotes from dealers as well. I'll post as and when I get them

Alan Day Honda - http://www.alanday.co.uk/aftersales/service.shtml - they recommend a "Level 2" service for £179, which sounds very similar to Kwik-Fit's interim service. Alan Day suggest that is all I would need.

Mine was a full service for diesel. They suggested brake fluid and air con re-charge but I declined those. I have all new tyres and pads on the front so didn't need any additional work. I had the same offer with the MOT but mine is not due for six months so not worth it. WRT interim or full depends on when you had your last service. If you had a major service last year and not done the milage then a minor one will be OK.

Rather than paying £154, I have paid £130 for a full service.
