1st Gear Question

Postby kamb1ng on Tue Mar 30, 2010 8:56 pm

Hi everyone,

We've had our 05 FR-V 1.7 for a little over a month now. Bought approved used from a local Honda dealer, and we've been very happy.

My only gripe is the fact that it's so difficult to put the shifter into the first gear when the car is not fully stopped. There is definitely some resistance there that sometimes I have to almost force it. Putting into first when the car is stationary is not a problem, oddly.

Other gears are completely fine. Clutch movement is also smooth.

Have you experienced the same? Is that a problem?

I googled it and found a person posting about a similar symptom, but there's no reply to his post in another forum:

Any idea is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I have a 05 1.7 and can't really say i've tried to put my car in 1st gear whilst moving, the only problem i've ever had is when i do not push the gear stick fully into 1st and as you take up drive with the clutch it can jump out of gear, but this can happen on any car so i don't class it as a problem.
If you are finding it stiff to select 1st, then whilst its under warranty i would take it back to the dealer and ask them for there opinion.

Have you tried double de-clutching?

Simple solution - don't change into first when the car is still moving! Why would you want to anyway? If the car is moving at all (however slowly) 2nd gear should allow you to pull away perfectly well (does on my 2.2 diesel anyway, and I think the 1.7 should also manage unless you are particularly heavily loaded, or towing). And if you are slowing down, presumably with a view to coming to a stop, there is no need to change down to first until you are stationary anyway!
