One problem after another

Postby evilstepdad on Sat Apr 17, 2010 5:36 am

Hi, We bought our FR-V about 18 months ago when it was less than a year old. We like its looks (honestly) and its versatility.
However since we've had it we've had one problem after another. A big issue is the alarm going off for no apparent reason (usually in the middle of the night, thank goodness we have understanding neighbours!). Then there was the amount of oil it uses - that fact was significantly absent from the sales pitch.
Now its the fact that we can't be sure that the thing will start when we have the audacity to want to go somewhere in it. Sometimes it will start sometimes it won't
We experience a total loss of power. It's as if the battery is dead. However we've had that checked by three different people who all say the battery is fine. The dealers cannot find the problem. However I have my doubts as to their competence.
Any ideas anyone? We do like the car, we would like to keep it, however unless we can sort this out we'll have to terminate what's turned out to be a difficult relationship!

Not a great honda experience for you then!
I must say its unusual for a honda to cause problems like yours. We know that the alarm can play up from time to time and if you have a read on here there is a thread all about alarms.
How much oil is it using, say in a month? 1 litre? 2 litre? is your car a diesel?
But the non starting point and no power is a new one on me. Next time it happens, unless you already know, does the interior light and headlights still work? If they don't then its got to be a poor connection to the main fuse box or loose earth somewhere. If it they do work it more likely to be an Ignition/Control module fault.
Let us know.

Check the earth strap that connects the engine to the front panel - our FRV failed to start (i.e. all electrics completely dead) one day and I found that this earth strap had a very poor (rusty) connection to the car - took it off, cleaned the metal, and no problems since! Might not be your problem, but worth a look I reckon...
