Gearbox questions...

Postby jyorke on Tue Aug 26, 2008 7:23 pm

Hi Peeps,

Just a quick question.

Just recently brought a Civic 1995 as a 3rd car for a run about, it was cheap, clean and tidy service records 89K on the clock, but (this is the but bit) I knew when I brought the car the gearbox makes noises in 1st, 2nd and 3rd, at first I would say it sounded like a grinding noise, however, I believe the noise is more like a dry bearing noise if that helps. I suspect that a bearing has gone somewhere in the gearbox.
I haven't checked the obvious, like if there is any oil in the gearbox at all, would this be worth checking? If so can someone tell me where it will be? I know that I'm looking for 2 plugs, but buggered if I can see them.

in gears 1st and 2nd the noise is not always there, when I let the clutch out the noise is there, then goes away until around 4k rpm, then it comes back, the noise is always in 3rd, but 4th and 5th nothing.

Can anyone suggest anything?

Thanks

James

I know that I am probably stating the obvious, but have you had a garage have a look?

Actually this is one of the main reasons i signed up on here. I have a 1996 with 130,000 miles doing exactly the same thing only difference is i'd say it's more of a whine than a grind. Now i wasnt sure if it was cause im used to Rear Wheel Drive fords and with those u cant hear any whines for the bangs!

I did notice however because the car had been stood for a couple of weeks before i picked it up, The clutch pedal was creeking and the thrust bearing was noisy! Now the Thurst bearing has gotten quieter and the creeking pedal has stopped. But im still getting this slight whine in 1st 2nd and 3rd like yourself!

Everything changes gear fine, smooth and pulls ok.

I really just wanted to find out if it was normal, if anyone else has had this and if so find out if it's worth worrying about or if it'll go on for thousands of miles without problems

I take it it is a manual box are you sure it is in the gearbox and not a dry thrust bearing in the clutch .
