Roof Box - Manual and advice required ?

Postby jonny1975 on Tue Aug 10, 2010 9:27 am

Hi,

My FRV has the factory fitted roof rack, which runs the length of the car roof (front to back). There doesn’t seem to be any information in the user manual as to how this is 'best used' or indeed how it can be removed? Does anyone have a manual / instruction book for this factory fitted roof rack?

The reason i ask is as follows:

I just picked up a genuine Honda FRV roof box on eBay, which came included with genuine Honda roof rack, which runs the width of the FRV roof (uses clamps to secure above the doors). Having briefly looked at things, it appears that you cannot use both together...

1) so i need to buy Honda 'cross bars', which sit on top of my factory fitted roof rack - i see these available for £130.47 INC VAT
http://www.hondapartsandaccessories.com/product/2006_FRV_Cross_Bars_08L02SJD600A-FR#

QUESTION ... ?
>Can i buy the Honda 'cross bars' for cheaper than £130.47? (new or used?)
>Could i find / use non-Honda 'cross bars' for cheaper than £130.47 for securing my roof box to my roof rack?
>Does anyone have the user manual for the Genuine 350ltr Honda Roof Box? It didn’t come with instructions from eBay!
>Could i take off the middle section of my factory fitted roof rack (runs length of car), to create a bit of space to mount the horizontal roof rack - thus ensuring that i wouldn’t have to spend any more money?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Regards

Jonny :)

Can't really help you much there jonny, but I would think you should be able to buy some non honda cross bars from halfrauds or somewhere. Or have a look at >>>> http://www.thule.com/en-GB/GB/ they might be able to give you somemore info.

As far as removing the roof rails go, i would imagine it would leave holes in your roof and are not designed to be taken off.

hi Marky,

Many thanks for your help on this (and my other) post ! Really appreciated ! :D

I'll have a look at Halfords or thule for cheaper non-honda 'cross bars'; i'm just not sure how these items 'fit' together correctly (hence my request for an instruction manual !!! :? ) GIven the fact that incorrect fitting of this item could be extremely dangerous for myself and other drivers, i really want to get it right.

With regards my suggestion to remove my factory fitted roof rack, i was simply meaning the 'middle section' (as i thought it might be modular). But, having just had a look at it again out of my window, i think you are right !!! (again, hence my request for an instruction manual !!! :? )

Oh well, time to find some cheap, Honda or Honda compatible, cross bars !!! :D

Thanks Marky,

Cheers

thule do some universal roof bars that would fit to roof rails...... only thing is the frv is quite wide so you'l need to do some measuring up....... the roof rails can be removed and theres a flap that slides out to prevent moisture entering etc its not water tight but doesnt need to be as there drainage in there to which exits in the corners of the windscreen (not in the motor) from what i can remember theres a plastic removable bit of plastic on the inner edge which when removed exposes a 13mm bolt on a expanding clamp...... be careful on removal as you dont wanna be scratching up your roof etc!

Hi Jonny,

Whilst I can't currently offer any advice on the roof rack, If you do not need the roof bars which came with the roof box, can I ask if you would consider selling them :?:
I have a roof box but no bars!

Hi Ian,

Thanks for your post.

To give an update, i ended up just buying the GENUINE HONDA CROSS BARS (which run the width of the FRV, fitting on to factory fitted Roof Bars, which run the length of the car). I managed to get these with a 10% discount from my local honda dealer, after showing them the 10% discount available at this online store of another Honda Dealer - http://www.hondapartsandaccessories.com/product/2006_FRV_Cross_Bars_08L02SJD600A-FR

You can also purchase the 'Non Factory Fitted Roof Bars' (run width of the FRV, and clamp onto car body under the doors) from this dealer - http://www.hondapartsandaccessories.com/product/2006_FRV_Roof_Rack_08L02SJD600-FR# . Thanks for the offer of buying mine, but i'm going to keep mine, just in case i buy a Diesel FRV in the future which doesnt have a factory fitted Roof Rack.

Cheers.

Ok Jonny, thanks for letting me know.

Looking at the price of those I may have a look for a cheaper set on e-bay or the like! :)
