I have a 2003 CRV auto petrol 63k. Have what I think is tappet noise when cold and when hot but not as bad. Noise comes in when accelerting when you put your foot on the pedal slightly but then release your foot and it goes. Cant notice it at high speed
Also noticed it comes in when cold and you put it from park into drive putting strain on engine.
Have done the valve clearances which didn't need hardly any adjustment at all to my suprise
Still got the same noise though no difference at all
Car starts first time idles well runs fine apart from this tapping noise. Getting about 30+ mpg on run
Just annoying tappet sort of noise!!!

Any suggestions welome

This noise could even be the small end bushes in your pistons
Have you been changing your oil and filter at the regular times and also using a good grade of oil.
The cam may have some signs of wear which you did not mention so I think that may not be the case.
