2004 - 2005 Honda Accord i - CTDI sport

Hi,

I'm looking for some advice. The car was driven up a hill at speed and was changed down to 3rd gear with a heavy load on board (me and camping gear). It was not noticed by me or the driver and the rev needle was well into the red-line (the top of it) for about 3 seconds. This caused the engine management system to activate and limited the revs to a small amount and she limped the car to safety.

Following the instructions, the car was restarted a few times and then driven normally. Unfortunately, the Turbo System did not seem to operate with the acceleration as normal until it got to the higher range of revs and the car will continue to accelerate, just very slowly and without the normal turbo sounds. The engine problem light was flashing amber to advise us to take it to the dealer.

We took the car there 6 weeks ago and being the main Honda dealer in the area expected results. We paid for a diagnostic and they ran some tests. The mechanics consulted with each other and decided that it needed a turbo. The warranty had run out and I was advised that a new part would be about £1600... WOW. However, they contacted their customer services and as a gesture of good will, they have given me the brand new turbocharger for £450 plus £300 for fitting. They fit the part and ran some tests on it and found that the problem was still there (I have no real detail or diagnostics from Honda but I believe the performance is identical to before the turbo was transplanted). They then sent off data to Honda head office back and forth to try and find the problem.

Unfortunately, there is no difference with the performance of the car and 6 weeks on they have fitted the part and have not found the underlying problem. Today they have asked to strip the engine down and attempt to find the fault. I have not paid for the turbo yet and have told them that I will require some kind of proof that the part was needed, bearing in mind that it hasn't made any difference to the problem.

The dealer has given me a brand new Civic as a courtesy car which I have had for the full 6 weeks, so I don't see any advantage for them in dragging this out. They have done 13 hours of labour and only charged me for 4 (fee for fitting the turbo). I feel that they have been open and fair with me, but ultimately I expect results. They are the experts right?

Q. Does anybody have any idea what could be the real problem?

Q. Do I really need to have the engine stripped or should I phone Honda and tell them not to?

Q. Any advice regarding my situation with my local Honda dealer? Should I pay the Turbo?

I apologise that this was so long winded, but I wanted to arm you with as much knowledge as possible.

I still love my Honda and thanks for listening,

Kenny

Kenny,

I just joined to the forum today and your issue cought my eye straightaway as I too experienced slightly similar issue with mine. Actually on mine the turbo went and after got it replaced the car is running fine. Honda gave me the turbo at a goodwill price (600+VAT) and in total it cost me 1k.
I hope you did not pay for turbo as it did not cure the issue but hope you managed to get the problems sorted.
